Music in Allendale's background story

Since its creation in 1992, the summer concerts of Music in Allendale enabled the extraordinary village of Allendale to provide audiences with performances from local professional musicians, its founding members. Through those musicians’ incredible connections, its remit has been expanded to include internationally acclaimed musical ensembles.

The standard of concerts is exceptional, as Sir Thomas Allen said, the cast of characters visiting Allendale reads like a “Who’s Who” of music in the UK, creating a centre of classical music in this small upland community. Allendale has been described as a kind of, “Shangri La, full of hidden virtues and exciting possibilities”.

Music in Allendale aims to support and promote professional performances in one of the most northerly villages of the North Pennines. The once local audience has expanded with music lovers travelling from far and wide for performances.

We hope our new audiences will enjoy the enriching possibilities of classical music in the sublime acoustic of St Cuthbert’s church, as well as the welcoming drinks and delicious light supper, where the fellowship of the musicians and other music lovers can be enjoyed.
